April is National Poetry Month. Throughout the country, literary organizations are celebrating with readings, book signings, exhibits, performances and shows.

Here in Humboldt County, April also marks the tenth anniversary of the Bus Poster Project, one of a series of literary events that took place in 1999 under the auspices of the Redwood Coast Writers’ Center, The Ink People Center for the Arts, and The California Poets and Writers’ Writers in Residence Program.

Led by poet Vinnie Peloso, the Bus Poster Project brought the work of twelve local writers and twelve local artists together on twelve different posters designed by students in the Graphic Design Program at HSU, printed by Times Printing and then, through an agreement with The Humboldt Transit Authority and Arcata and Mad River Transit, displayed on Humboldt county busses. The original agreement called for two posters to be displayed for one year on each bus.

Ten years later, some of these same busses are still in service. And these still sport some of the same posters. Inspired by this fact, Libby Maynard, Executive Director of the Ink People, and Vinnie Peloso recently approached Jim Wilson of the Humboldt Transit Authority to ask if HTA would be interested in some more posters.

The answer was a resounding “Yes!”

Ten years later, the Bus Poster Project lives on. Last month, sixty more posters were put in the HTA busses to intrigue, entertain and educate local mass transit passengers. Look for these colorful combinations of image and text inside each bus the next time you’re aboard.

Happy National Poetry Month! Enjoy the ride.
